At the base of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Page Mill Winery was established in 1976. At the time, the creator, Dick Stark, was selling lasers around the world and would stroll through the Rheingau in Germany visiting small family wineries on his days off. He returned to California and recommended to Ome’s wife that they change their lives.

Dick spent 28 days excavating a cellar below the family home on Page Mill Road in Los Altos Hills with his son, Eric, and Page Mill Winery was born. Dick started producing wines in the state from vineyards and developed up to 1,200 cases of production. He concentrated on small lots of wines designated by the vineyards.

To explore the family business, Dick’s youngest son, Dane, took a semester off in 1989. He’s been with the winery since college graduation. Ome and Dick retired in 1996 and moved to Twain Harte in the Sierra Foothills. Dane continued operations at the Los Altos Hills family house until a relocation became inevitable because of the physical constraints of the land. The winery moved to the serenity of the Livermore Valley in 2004. Output has risen to 3,500 cases, and Page Mill wines can be purchased in the tasting room, restaurants and retailers in the Bay Area.

The wine is fine, the staff are very nice and the outdoor area is very relaxing. You will love being there for the twilight tasting on a Thursday night, watching the sunset and enjoying the atmosphere and the delicious wine. The friendly over-the-top staff makes the experience outstanding.

Wineries usually employ winemakers by following the winemaking process to produce different wines from grapes. This method includes fruit fermentation, as well as juice blending and ageing. The grapes may be from the winery’s own vineyards or may be brought in from other countries. Many wineries also sell tours and have cellar doors or tasting rooms where wines can be tasted by consumers before they buy. The architecture of wineries is very complex and rich, and wineries use it as a way to advertise their wines and cellar doors.
