When Lisa and Lothar Maier purchased a 20 acre vineyard located on Kalthoff Commons in the southwest corner of the Livermore Valley in January 2006, their family venture began. They agreed that the current vineyard was not up to their expectations. They pulled out the existing vines that year and tilled the soil to break the hard-pan barrier below the surface of this field. Then they planted small parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Tempranillo, Barbera, Petite Sirah and Chardonnay in various clones. Their love labor started in earnest.

They believed that the name of our winery and vineyard needed to be true to the rich heritage of the Livermore Valley, with their passion and efforts devoted to the vines. So, to find the right inspiring name for our endeavor, they started to browse through local history books and maps. In their study, they found that due to the many streams and watering, Robert Livermore named his original 40,000 acre property Rancho Las Positas.

Today, Las Positas Vineyards is a family winery that produces small lots of wines with unique character and outstanding quality that are produced on the farm.

Brent Amos, their winemaker, has a degree in Oenology and Viticulture from the State University of Fresno. He had previously worked at Ferrari-Carano, Fritz, and created award-winning wines at Fenestra winery in Livermore, CA for 7 years. The first vintage of Brent was in the year 2000.

Wines from Las Positas Vineyards are available online and in the tasting room. Visit them and enjoy their wines and stunning views of the vineyard.

They are launching their first sparkling wine from Las Positas this year. Las Positas sparkling wine has been chosen especially for Las Positas Vineyards by our winemaker. It’s vivid and luxurious with apple, peach, and spiced pear flavours. A creamy and velvety palate, with pear, meyer lemon and candied ginger flavours.

They feel that this sparkling wine is going to be a fine addition to every meal or special occasion and just pure drinking joy. For 9 months, their Chardonnay 2017 was barrel fermented and aged sur lie. This is an elegant wine with green apple, lemon, and peach flavours. With rich flavors of pear, citrus, and spice, the palate is complex.
